Portuguese fado singer Carminho's new EP Carminho at Electrical Audio, out now, was recorded in collaboration with the late Steve Albini at his iconic Electrical Audio studio in Chicago in October 2023. “Anyone who worked with Steve Albini knows of his humble authenticity and dedication towards perfecting raw sound," Carminho says. "He made the recordings sound as if we were performing in a fado house in Lisbon." A music video for “Deixei a minha casa” featuring Albini and Carminho together in the studio can be seen here. Carminho tours the US in November.

Carminho performs from the picturesque Palácio da Pena in Sintra, Portugal, as part of Good Morning America host Robin Roberts' reporting from there. Roberts talks with the "Portuguese icon" about fado and Carminho's bringing it to the big screen via her role in Yorgos Lanthimos's 2023 Oscar-winning film, Poor Things. "Her highly renowned performance captivated Emma Stone's character and the audience in a magical scene," says Roberts. As she does in the film, Carminho performs "O quarto," from her new album, Portuguesa. You can watch it here.

Portuguese fado singer Carminho's album Maria is due in the US on September 27 via Nonesuch Records. Its title is her given first name and a name in Portugal that's both traditional and a popular choice among contemporary young parents, as fado is both part of a tradition and belongs to today's world. Carminho, who wrote many of the lyrics and songs and produced the record herself, considers it a dialogue between herself and two fado singers who blazed a trail for her: Beatriz da Conceição and Teresa Siqueira (her mother). London Jazz News calls it "a beautifully realized, remarkably varied yet uniformly gorgeous album." Pre-order to download the tracks "O Menino e a Cidade" and "Estrela" now.
